Week 1 Down – Value Prop and Research

Tonight is our first Declaration Redux.  I keep trying to tell my story in a few different ways, so we'll see how tonight goes over.  Condensing it all into just 5 minutes is rather tough, but I am thinking of it like a true elevator pitch (assuming we are stuck between floors and have lots of visuals).  Since I haven't designed in a while, I feel like my design muscles are out of practice, and I am stuck in s&h template mode - hopefully, my presentation isn't too horrible

The more research I do on my audience, I am conflicted about the need for science.  I see it in the big picture - jobs, innovation, thought process - but will  young girls care?  They are focused on social good, so maybe the hook is climate change?  They want to be creators and collaborators - but how do I become an influencer and not a crazy old aunt?

I am truly obsessed with Kenzo's new campaigns - short films by Spike Jonze and Carrie Brownstein.  They have nothing to do with the product, but they have an incredible sense of humor and visuals, and the print ads mimic movie posters.

There is an iphone app called PhotoSesh where you can hire a professional photographer by the hour to video you - this may come in handy for my videos.

I am still concerned that all of our classes are business based.  I am a little curious about when/how to start prototyping and user testing, but hopefully, we'll get to that soon.

Let the Venture Begin

Just some background:  In the Spring of 2016, I declared my thesis.

Beacon - a non-profit, online media platform that will engage and inspire young American girls about Science through interactive content and social cinema.

Originally, I had thought of doing SnapChat type stories that could be consolidated into a web platform.  Now I am considering other forms of social cinema - a graphic novel, a magazine for mothers to share and read with their daughters, a comic book, a platform for user generated content.  In the end, it needs to be compelling story telling - visually stimulating to breed intellectual curiosity in tween girls.

Classes begin this week - Here we go.
